Finitud y envejecimiento.

Abstract

This work reflects on how people in middle and fourth age envision their horizon of finitude in a world that understands death as a technical, brief, secular, and private matter. The aim of this paper is to present some results of my doctoral thesis. This is a qualitative, exploratory study structured around two core ideas, a) The construction of an ideal death, and b) The beliefs of adults and elderly people regarding the afterlife. The analysis is based on 44 biographic interviews conducted with people born between 1957 and 1972 (young cohort), and between 1917 and 1932 (old cohort). The field work was done in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires between 2009 and 2012. Findings show that there is an ideal, with no variation in both cohorts, which rejects suffering as an ontological dimension of death. Differences are associated to “typical” stances of life course, and they are linked to a greater interest about the conditions under which the elderly die, and a concern, among middle-aged people, over seeing their children become adults. The afterlife was representedas a supernatural life, either linked to reincarnation, meeting loved ones again, spiritual continuity, or resurrection; or, in contrast, the existence of the afterlife was rejected skeptically. It should be noted that those who do not believe in continuity, consider children, grandchildren and/or great-grandchildren as their symbol of transcendence.
