Grabados de guanacos en la Patagonia austral

Abstract

In this paper, representations of guanacos found on the Strobel lake high plateau, Province of Santa Cruz, and executed by the engraving technique are examined and characterised. Featuring close to 400 figures, distributed over a total of 29 sites, this area presents a unique record for Southern Patagonia. The analysis carried out makes it possible to evaluate how, where and when it was decided to depict this animal. The design variability thus recognised is assigned to two moments of execution of differentiated chronology, one dated as mid- and the other as late Holocene. The distribution of these figures is considered within a broad spatial scale, thus evaluating the role they played in the rock art of Santa Cruz high plateaux. Finally, the implications of the analysis for the regional-scale sequences proposed by other authors is discussed.
