Abstract

A rock magnetic study on an edaphized Quaternary glacifluvial deposit in Bahia San Sebastián, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, is presented. The dominant magnetic mineralogy in the cross-section is PSD and MD magnetite or titanomagnetite. A decrease in the concentration of ferrimagnetic minerals in the pedogenetic levels respect to the lower ones, with no evidence of edaphic processes, was observed. These results are similar to those obtained in the Pampean region of Argentina. No neo-formation of high coercivity fractions or superparamagnetic minerals was detected. Generation of these minerals occurs during dry seasons when amorphous gels produced during the humid phase are dehydrated and crystallized. From the obtained results it is estimated that edaphization took place in the Isotopic Stage 51, during sub-Stage 5e.
