Abstract

The Italian pharmacist Dr. Domingo Parodi (1823-1889) has had a relevant professional activity in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. Fifteen years after his death, Dr. Enrique D. Parodi bestowed his father´s personal library and herbaria to the Museo de Farmacología, which nowadays is the Museo de Farmacobotánica “Juan Aníbal Domínguez” at the Facultad de Farmacia y Bioquímica. These herbaria include the important collections formerly belonging to Weicker (mostly Centroeuropean, but also includes the Chilean and Argentinean materials collected by Philippi), those of Balansa (Paraguay) and Uruguay (Gibert´s herbarium). Additionally, Domingo Parodi´s own collections from Paraguay and Argentina were included in this gift. Among these last collections, still a separate set of specimens is kept, the –erroneously called– D. Parodi´s voucher herbarium sheets for the two editions of his publication “Notas sobre algunas plantas usuales del Paraguay, de Corrientes y de Misiones” (Parodi, 1877-78; Parodi, 1886), deserve some commentaries in the present paper. However, in spite of the polemical facts shown by Hassler and Malme, which challenge Parodi´s own knowledges in Botany and his apparent misconduct regarding the origin of such collections and his relationships with Eberhard Munck af Rosenschöld, some earlier evidences of Domingo Parodi´s pure botanical contributions were published in the Revista Farmacéutica, and few plant descriptions still bear his abbreviation, thus recognizing his authorship
