Desigualdad estructural y determinación social

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es profundizar algunos de los temas avanzados durante la Mesa Redonda Internacional sobre ?Desigualdad estructural y microcefalía: la determinación social de una epidemia?, evento que inspiró la publicación de este Cuaderno de Trabajo (CPqAM, FIOCRUZ ? WATERLAT-GOBACIT, 2016). Diversas intervenciones publicadas en relación al brote epidémico del virus Zika que tuvo epicentro en Pernambuco, Brasil, en 2015, apoyan el argumento de que es necesario promover la producción de conocimiento sobre el problema enfatizando enfoques alternativos al status quo que tiende a reducir las intervenciones a las intervenciones químicas o centradas en la dimensión biológica del problema. Aunque frente a los eventos epidémicos se tiende a movilizar a la población y a robustecer las actividades de educación e información pública para reducir el impacto, con demasiada frecuencia estas intervenciones se reducen a la implementación de políticas públicas de corto plazo. Estas intervenciones no incorporan la dimensión de lo que denominamos la determinación social, especialmente referida a los procesos que generan y mantienen desigualdades e injusticias estructurales en los planos intra e intergeneracional, cuyo impacto se manifiesta, entre otros graves problemas, en las recurrentes crisis sanitarias.
