Abstract

Archaeological survey has been carried out in the area of Los Corrales river ravine, El Infiernillo, Tucumán, since 2005. Numerous agricultural, pastoral, and residential structures have been detected. The latter concentrate mainly in the southern portion of the ravine, in Puesto Viejo sector. In a previous analysis of lithic material from Structure 1 in Puesto Viejo 2 (which has been dated to 2000 BP) a frequency and distribution of composite artifacts was noted that may show differences in the use of domestic space. In this paper, differences in lithic material from RC and R4 assemblages are examined with the aim of discovering patterns that may enable the diversity of activities to be understood and a hypothesis regarding the role of composite artifacts in early agropastoral societies to be formulated. Results show differences between the assemblages analysed that may be due to contemporary activities and the probable role of the assemblage in processing tasks related to a food producer society.
