Abstract

This article aspires to show that the cultures produced in the Argentinean North West suppose a tight link between a dominant economic system (the sugar cane industry) and a regent institution (the University of Tucuman) Aesthetic and ideological paradigms that articulate the discourses emitted in that context constitute instances of dialogue with the society that generates them and the national and international frame in which the local sphere is inserted. Different from the metropolitan scene -articulated around European paradigms, over all French the corpus developed in the XXth century in this region demands an explanatory model based on a polycentric system of references and consecration, where Euro-centered aesthetic ideals coexist with Andean-rooted practices and values, and a creative impulse clung to labor, and the reflection on it, are seminal elements of its symbolic warp. To address the study of this region, then, two ways are considered: on one hand, the identification of moments when intellectuals whose closeness to national power design cultural projects to set up the regional strengthening and make their ideas to be accomplished. On the other, an itinerary on artistic representations projected on the region is outlined, taken as axis two main spheres, one related to sugar cane and the other linked to the Calchaqui ancestors, considering the critical reflection made on those productions.
