Las turberas de Tierra del Fuego y el clima del pasado

Abstract

Los ecosistemas con capacidad para acumular y almacenar materia orgánica muerta derivada de plantas adaptadas a vivir en condiciones de saturación de agua permanentes, reducido contenido de oxigeno y escasa disponibilidad de nutrientes se denominan turbales. Turba es el nombre dado a la materia orgánica muerta en tales condiciones. Una turbera es toda área donde la turba está siendo producida y acumulada progresivamente, incrementando el espesor del depósito orgánico. La saturación por agua conduce a bajas temperaturas y bajo contenido de oxigeno, estas condiciones inhiben la actividad de microorganismos (hongos y bacterias) que normalmente producen la descomposición de la materia vegetal muerta. De esta manera, la materia vegetal es descompuesta en una tasa menor a la que es producida, lo cual permite la acumulación de turba.
