Abstract

Hierbas anuales o perennes, arbustos o árboles con ramas de nudos engrosados. Hojas opuestas, compuestas, pinnadas o imparipinnadas con el folíolo terminal abortado,folíolos 2-20, frecuentemente asimétricos, estípulas 2, deciduas o persistentes, raro espinosas. Flores solitarias o en dicasios paucifloros, pseudoaxilares, perfectas, actinomorfas o levemente zigomorfas. Cáliz (4-)5, pétalos libres, imbricados, ungiculados, blancos o amarillos. Estambres (8-)10, libres, insertos en el receptáculo, filamentos filiformes, a veces soldados en su base a una escama foliosa o carnosa; anteras pequeñas,dorsifijas o basifijas, con 2 tecas 2-loculares de dehiscencia longitudinal introrsa. Ovario súpero, sésil, sobre un disco basal o bien sobre un ginecóforo, 3-5(-12) carpelar, generalmente cónico, estriado, surcado, alado o espiciforme, con (1-) 2-numerososóvulos péndulos por carpelo, placentación axilar. Fruto cápsula que se separa en (2-)3-5(-12) cocos indehiscentes, raro loculicidas o septicidas, excepcionalmente baya drupácea. Semillas con embrión recto o curvado, endospermadas o exalbuminadas. En Argentina habitan en regiones áridas, subhúmedas o salinas del noroeste, oeste yPatagonia hasta la provincia de Chubut.
