Abstract

Herbáceas anuales o perennes. Tallo con nudos e internudos prominentes. Hojas alternas, dísticas o dispuestas en espiral, sésiles o pecioladas, lámina simple, entera. Inflorescencia solitaria o en cincinos, a veces sésiles. Flores bisexuales, raro unisexual, actinomorfas o zigomorfas. Sépalos 3, libres o unidos por la base. Pétalos (2) 3, libres a veces soldados y tubulares hasta la mitad; estambres 6, libres, 2-3 fértiles; anteras de dehiscencia longitudinal, raro poricida apical; estaminodios 1-3. Fruto cápsula valvada. Aproximadamente 40 géneros y 650 especies de regiones tropical a subtropical y templada.
