¿Quién necesita los tipos funcionales de plantas?

Abstract

Who needs plant functional types? The idea of plant functional types (PFTs) has gained increasing acceptance in the past few years. Here we present a synthesis of the main concepts, tools, and perspectives related to PFTs, and discuss them in relation to other plant classification systems. The PFT approach is based on the use of ecologically meaningful traits, and provides flexible classifications according different scales of analysis and research objectives. PFTs represent a useful approach to the description of functional biodiversity at different spatial scales. They also constitute a promising tool to understand the effects of biodiversity on ecosystem processes. This approach is complementary, rather than opposite, to classic and phylogenetic classifications.
