Abstract

Acid oils are one of the new raw materiales used in biodiesel production because of their low cost. Free fatty acids present in any acid oil are usually contaminants in the transesterification reaction converting triglycerides to esters. Nevertheless, if direct esterification reaction of free fatty acids is performed, this effluent transforms into a new raw material increasing biodiesel production and eliminating residue. These are the reasons why in this work, the transformation of oleic acid into esters has been studied employing both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in the presence of triglycerides. In this research, sulfuric acid (homogeneous catalyst) and basic interchange resin (heterogeneous catalyst) were compared. Each catalyst was employed to reduce the amount of free fatty acids under different operation conditions; the most relevant variables tested were reaction temperature, percentage of catalyst used, the relation from alcohol to oil and the amount of free fatty acids iniatially present. The results obtained show that both catalysts that were employed made it possible to obtain a high conversion of free fatty acids, over 75%.
