Abstract

This paper presents some thoughts related to academic education of Social Worker undergraduates on the basis of two categories: the null curriculum (Eisner, 1979) and production of absences (De Sousa Santos, 2006). The first category allows for some revision and questioning of education in the Social Work program, as it surveys silences and break ups- what we are not teaching and yet is effective in its absence. This vacuum is thus manifested in different kinds of absences: debates, theories, epistemological approaches, practices, and alternative logics for teaching and learning. The sort of analysis De Sousa Santos (2006) offers from the decolonial perspective and Epistemology from the South is closely related to this perspective, since it denounces a Modernity which produces absences, invisibilizing experiences and contracting the present. This ‘waste of experience’ implies the concealment of realities with emancipatory powers. The aim is to debate about education from this standpoint and to contribute to current processes of teaching and learning and curricular reform from a ‘didactics of absences.
