Abstract

The aim of this paper, which includes imagery taken from scientific, criminological and artistic catalogs, is to examine the notion of collection. The catalogue, one of the most extended forms of the biopolitical fin-de-siècle archive, is also a central device in fin-de-siècle literature: À Rebours (1884) by J.-K. Huysmans, Monsieur de Phocas (1901) by Jean Lorrain, Le chercheur de tares (1898 ) by Catulle Mendès, may in fact be read as collections of oddities and deformities. These last decades, critical and theoretical discourse has reexamined the corpus of the décadence, in an approach that is no longer exclusively driven by historiographical interest. Serialization, deformation of language, readings of modernity as anti-nature, associations between « critic » and « clinic », topics such as disintegration or artificiality of the body, are elements that have an obvious resonance in contemporary criticism, art and literature. This reinterpretation of the fin-de-siècle can thus be understood as an archeology that critical reflection formulates to understand its own conditions of enunciation. To speak of décadence, criticism proposes new collections of aberrations, as if décadence forced critical discourse to propose its own series : the following pages interrogate the persistence of this decadent seriality.
