Abstract

In this paper we analyze Francisco Castañeda’s discourse as part of the ecclesiastical reform debate of Buenos Aires. We examine his intervention in 1821, which leads to the closing of his newspapers, a trial that not only takes him to court, but also condemns him to prison. The figure of the philosopher as the one that has the new ideas of the eighteenth century, the role of public and media writer, the place of the church in the revolutionary state, the notion of popular sovereignty are notions that are part of our priest intervention on the reform debate. His discourse aims to question the reform group and, in that sense, appeals to the people as the sovereign power that can change the sanction of the law. Precisely, this study aims to show that expressions and arguments which refer to "ministerial despotism" and the claim to "the people" to punish those officials, are one of the main issues that lead to the Franciscan priest to have to give explanations on court.
