This paper summarizes research undertaken in the parochial archives of the Catalonian cities of Igualada (Barcelona) and Olot (Gerona) between 2006 and 2007. It ranges from the foundation of the archives in the 16th and 17th Centuries, respectively, until recent times. It departs from the genealogy of one individual, José Escudé Nadal, exploring the anthropological and sociological dimensions of life in these small towns, as can be drawn from parochial records. It especially focuses on the differences, as regards endogamy, between an isolated town sitting by the Pyrenees such as Olot, and one subject to constant intercity traffic between Barcelona and Lerida, such as Igualada. Finally, it generates some educated guesses regarding families of probable Jewish ancestry and their integration into the mainstream community after the 1492 expulsion.
