La primera generación de teorías surgió en la década del sesenta. Se interesaban en las distintas formas de actividad y grados de satisfacción en la vida. Su análisis a nivel micro social se basaba en conceptos como roles, normas y grupos de referencia explicaban el grado de adaptación a la declinación considerada propia del envejecimiento.
