Los patógenos infectan a las plantas para obtener nutrientes y cumplir su ciclo de vida. Según el tipo de nutrición que presenten, ya sean biótrofos, hemibiótrofos o necrótrofos, y de los órganos y tejidos del hospedante que afecten, se van a alterar diferentes funciones fisiológicas (Figura V.1). A su vez, estas funciones fisiológicas alteradas se relacionan con síntomas característicos. Es decir, existe una relación entre los síntomas observados y las funciones afectadas aunque, en muchas ocasiones la interacción planta-patógeno es compleja. En una interacción incompatible establecida entre el hospedante resistente y el patógeno avirulento, se activan mecanismos de defensa, se altera el metabolismo y frecuentemente se producen reacciones de hipersensibilidad (Figura V.1)...
