En la Argentina, la tristeza del ajo es causada por el fitoplasma Garlic Decline (GDIII), perteneciente al grupo X-disease (16SrIII subgrupo J) (Galdeano et al., 2004). Fitoplasmas que pertenecen a este mismo subgrupo fueron detectados infectando tomate, zapallito, girasol y coqueta (Bellis perennis). Este fitoplasma es diferente al reportado en cultivos de ajo en Canadá, el que presenta diferentes síntomas y pertenece al grupo 16SrI (Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris) (Khadhair et al., 2002). En un relevamiento realizado en diferentes regiones del país se encontraron plantas con síntomas de tristeza del ajo que estaban infectadas con otro fitoplasma del grupo X-disease pero del subgrupo B, el que se encuentra también en cultivos de duraznero y paraíso entre otros. No se ha encontrado hasta el momento malezas circundantes al cultivo afectadas por el patógeno, y que podrían funcionar como reservorios del patógeno durante el período en que el ajo no está en cultivo.
