Abstract

There is a gap between expected thermal performance simulation and real building behavior once they are in use. This gap increases if the design integrates passive strategies that require an active user. This work proposes an approximation to the quantification of occupants influence on the thermal performance of dwellings. Five user profiles were determined: one passive, three intermediate and one active. As a case study, an urban dwelling in the city of Mendoza, Argentina (32º 40´ S; 68º 51´ W y 750 masl), was on site monitoring in summer. Nocturnal natural ventilation strategy was chosen because it required an active user for its good performance and to be appropriate for continental temperate climates. In situ measurements were taken as well as an accurate record of each user action during the management of the envelope by users passive and active, in January 2017. The data obtained allowed the adjustment of a computer simulation performed using Energy Plus and to define 3 simulated intermediate user profiles in the same period. Percentages of temperatures within the comfort range for each user profile were obtained by statistical analysis. The results show that a proper use of natural nocturnal ventilation in summer (active user) significantly improves indoor comfort conditions. Resulting 82% of the temperatures within the comfort range without the use of auxiliary energy for cooling. The three profiles of intermediate users showed comfort temperatures by 73%, 55%, and 63% respectively. In the same period, the monitoring data of the passive user shows an overheating of the indoor air, obtaining only 43% of the temperatures within the thermal comfort range.
