Optimización del Proceso de Extracción por Arrastre de Vapor de Aceite Esencial de Mentha Piperita L. y Origanum Vulgare L.

Abstract

From the perspective of production of bioinputs and chemical specialties, the cultivation of aromatic plants traces various market niches with opportunities for diversified sustainable productive development and promotes the regional agroecological economy. Particularly, the essential oils of Mentha piperita L. (mint) and Origanum vulgare L. (oregano) are a source of active components with useful attributes for the sustainability of agricultural systems. In this regard, determining the optimal conditions for the extraction of these derivatives (maximum performance and minimum cost/ml) is important for describing the profitability of the activity. In this work, the levels of plant mass and distillation time that produce an optimal response during the steam extraction process using a 10 liter distiller are presented. Using the response surface methodology and a central composite design, it was obtained that the optimal extraction conditions for peppermint oil correspond to 297.5 g of mass and a time of 1.07 h, for which a yield of 2.74 ml% and a cost of $1.20/ml are obtained. On the other hand, the optimal conditions for extracting oregano oil correspond to 331.4 g of mass and a time of 1.54 h, for a yield of 1.12 ml% and a cost of $3.39/ml.
