Abstract

The Salado Basin is the leading region for calf production in Argentina's beef industry. Creole cattle breed is a minority and remains under-researched in this area. The goals of this study were to describe the phenotypic evolution of weaning weight (PDTT) in Argentine Creole cattle herd located in the Salado Basin, estimate its variance components and genetic parameters, and predict the expected progeny differences (EPDs). A 29-year database (1992-2020) was used, comprising 1,155 records from calves born to 123 dams that had completed their productive lifespan and 46 sires. A maternal effects model was employed, considering year and season of birth, calf sex, and dam age at weaning as fixed effects. The average PDTT was 209.10±28.51 kg. Direct and maternal heritability for PDTT were estimated in 0,46 ±0,12 y 0,05±0,06, whereas EPD ranged from -17.09±5,31 kg to 13.92±5,11kg, with a mean of 0.36±0.13. The average number of calves per cow during her lifespan was 9.55. The results indicate that increased use of the Creole breed, either in purebred or crossbreeding systems, could enhance the productive indices of cattle breeding in the region.
