Abstract

The main purpose of this study was the trophic state evaluation and the nutrients description in two shallow template lakes: Unamuno and Calderón (Buenos Aires province, Argentina) during three and two years, respectively. Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Silica, organic particulate matter and chlorophyll-a concentrations from surface water samples were obtained in laboratory. Physical parameters were measured in situ. Morphometric data were obtained from satellite data processing. Water quality of shallow lakes was determined based on their trophic state. The aforementioned, was estimated according to the Carlson Index on chlorophyll-a values. Unamuno and Calderón shallow lakes were characterized as oligohaline and mesohaline water bodies, respectively. Phosphate concentrations were relatively high in both lakes when compared with mean values in Pampean shallow lakes. The ammonium and nitrate concentrations were prevalent among the nitrogen components. According to the trophic state, the shallow lake water quality is neither acceptable for drinking water production nor for swimming purposes.
