Abstract

La sangre es un tipo de tejido conjuntivo especializado. Como todo tejido conjuntivo está formado por una matriz extracelular, en este caso una fase líquida denominada plasma, en el cual están suspendidas las células sanguíneas. Un adulto promedio de 70 kg tiene un volumen total de sangre de alrededor de 6 litros (concepto conocido como volemia), lo cual equivale al 7 – 8 % del peso corporal total. La sangre cumple una amplia variedad de funciones, entre ellas:- transporte (llevando oxígeno y nutrientes hacia las células y removiendo productos de desecho metabólico y dióxido de carbono desde ellas),- distribución de hormonas y sustancias reguladoras desde su lugar de secreción hacia los órganos blanco o células diana;- transporte de células especializadas y componentes humorales del sistema inmunitario para la defensa del organismo ante agentes reconocidos como extraños; -regulación de la temperatura corporal; -amortiguación del pH a través de los sistemas buffer; y detención de hemorragias a partir del transporte de factores de coagulación y plaquetas. Como podemos ver, la mayoría de las funciones del tejido sanguíneo están relacionadas con la capacidad de transporte de sustancias y, por lo tanto, y su circulación por el sistema cardiovascular. Es importante mencionar que para que exista flujo sanguíneo, es necesaria la actividad de la bomba cardíaca, la cual impulsa la sangre a través de los vasos sanguíneos permitiendo que llegue a todos los tejidos del organismo.
