Abstract

La Real Academia española en su voz geográfica señala que un continente es “cada una de las grandes extensiones de tierra separadas por los océanos” (https://dle.rae.es/continente). Cuando se nombra algún continente, ya sea América, Europa, Asia, Oceanía o África, se da por sentado que se trata de un recorte definidodel planeta. Suelen naturalizarse sus limites sin ningún tipo de cuestionamiento.Sin embargo, algunos países, como Inglaterra, dividen al mundo en seis continentes (los cuatro anteriores y agregan América del Sur separado de América del Norte); a veces suman uno más, si se considera a la Antártida. Otros, en cambio, solo hablan de cinco continentes, ya que no dividen a América en dos. No obstante, lejos de ser una divisiónnatural los continentes son el resultado de una invención cultural, histórica y en el caso de América hasta cartográfica (O’Gorman, 2004; Grataloup, 2009).Este capítulo se divide en tres secciones: en la primera se indagan las definiciones de continente desde la geografía física; en la segunda se discute y se intenta tensionar esas definiciones poniendo principal atención en las fronteras intercontinentales; en la tercera se analiza la construcción de la delimitación de América como continente.
