Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the perception of parental social support as a predicting factor of social skills in children with cancer. This study also aimed at discovering how much each parent influences the prediction of social abilities in their child. the sample consisted of 30 children with cancer from two oncologic services in the provinces of Mendoza and San Juan. The argentine adaptation of the Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters (MESSY), to measure social skills and the spanish translation of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used. A multiple linear regression analysis was used to study if perceived social support predicted social skills in children with cancer. In light of the obtained results, parental social support was found to be positively related to social skills in children. However, it was observed that the maternal figure is in fact what explains a meaningful percentage of the social skills shown by children. The obtained data have particularly important implications if the sample that was studied and the role of parents as the main source of support and social model in childhood are taken into account.
