Abstract

This paper presents the registration and analysis of a collection of ceramic, bone, and iron pieces recovered from a fortuitous ! nd in the center of the present town of San Carlos, province of Salta, in the year 2022. The collection was donated to the Jallpha Kalchaki Municipal Museum (San Carlos) and is currently known as the Magdalena Herrera (MH) Archaeological Collection. The investigation carried out on this collection allowed for its temporal and relative dating to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Based on the morphological and technological aspects of the objects, relationships could be established with other contemporary contexts in the northern Calchaquí Valley and the Yocavil Valley, leading us to pose questions about interregional links among indigenous populations under the context of the initial advance of the Spanish colony in these territories. The survey and study of the collection provide new data on a historical period (sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) that is scarcely known and addressed in archaeological research.
