Humedales y zonas inundables

Abstract

Los humedales son ecosistemas de gran valor para el ser humano por- que proporcionan recursos naturales y servicios para la sociedad. No sólo sustentan la diversidad biológica sino, sobre todo, constituyen una importante reserva de agua dulce. La errada noción de que son zonas inservibles dio lugar a su drenaje y secado o conversión en áreas dedicadas a la agricultura intensiva, la industria y la vivienda, por lo que la existencia de los humedales se halla seriamente comprometida. Por fortuna, en los últimos años, se extendió la idea de que deben ser conservados. En qué consisten estos ecosistemas, cuál es su riqueza, por qué están en peligro y qué beneficios representan para las personas son aspectos que se abordan en el presente capítulo.
