Frutas finas nativas de la patagonia austral: los Berberis

Abstract

Si bien la importancia de la flora silvestre como fuente de alimentos es bien conocida, los estudios sobre el potencial agronómico y medicinal son escasos. En la Patagonia existen especies nativas cuyos pequeños frutos tienen una demanda muy importante para la elaboración de diversos productos, como las especies del género Berberis, comúnmente llamadas ´calafates´ o `michay´. Berberis buxifolia es un arbusto siempreverde y espinoso, que puede llegar hasta los 4 m de altura, que en Tierra del Fuego a menudo crece en los montes bajos, en los márgenes y claros del bosque de Nothofagus, en áreas húmedas de estepas, a lo largo de ríos y arroyos. Esta especie, que se distribuye desde Neuquén hasta Tierra del Fuego, pudo ser propagada por semillas, rizomas y por cultivo in vitro. El crecimiento y la producción de frutos fueron estudiados en una población natural en las cercanías de Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. Berberis heterophylla es un arbusto espinoso de 1-1,5 m de altura, que crece en la meseta patagónica, formando parte de comunidades edáficas sobre los cañadones de ríos y arroyos, a la orilla de lagunas o en pantanos, así como también en los Andes Patagónicos. Esta especie se distribuye desde Neuquén hasta Santa Cruz y pudo ser propagada por rizomas. El crecimiento y la producción de frutos fueron estudiados en diversas poblaciones naturales de Santa Cruz.
