Abstract

Hierbas a arbustos inermes. Hojas alternas. Inflorescencias en racimos espiciformes; brácteas caducas. Flores papilionáceas, pediceladas; cáliz caduco en el fruto, sépalos libres; quilla sin cresta ni apéndices; estambres 4, 6 u 8, parcialmente unidos en una vaina estaminal, separados en dos grupos por una barra mediana glabra o pubescente; ovario 1-2-locular, glabro, pubescente o hirsuto, con nectario basal; estilo curvo, glabro o pubescente, área estigmática con el lóbulo estéril glabro, lóbulo fértil sobre un breve soporte, márgenes glabros. Fruto samaroide o drupáceo, reticulado. Semillas 1-2 por lóculo, piriformes; elaiosoma ausente.Género neotropical ca. 150 especies; la mayoría crecen en los Andes tropicales y Mesoamérica, con algunas especies creciendo en áreas abiertas del sur de Sudamérica. En la Argentina se hallan nueve especies nativas y dos endémicas.
