Abstract

Arbustos escandentes o más comúnmente lianas leñosas, raramente arbustos o arbolitos. Hojas alternas, simples, con tricomas en la superficie adaxial y abaxial. Inflorescencias en racimos o panículas, con glándulas en la región nodal de la base de los pedicelos; brácteas y bractéolas caducas, persistentes en el ápice de las inflorescencias. Flores zigomorfas; 3 sépalos externos carnosos, cóncavos, de ápice agudo, 2 sépalos internos elípticos a suborbiculares; quilla con cresta fimbriada; ovario giboso. Fruto una sámara 1-locular, 1- o 2-alada con un ala mas desarrollada que la otra, cáliz caduco en el fruto. Semilla 1, discoide, glabra, con tegumento membranáceo; elaiosomas ausentes.Género pantropical con ca. 80 especies, la mayoría Neotropicales. El centro de diversidad de Securidaca parece ser la selva amazónica, donde se encuentra la mayor diversidad de especies. En la Argentina crece una especie nativa.
