Abstract

En la década de 1950, Hume, médico residente del Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, implantó un riñón cadavérico a una paciente con insuficiencia renal aguda que funcionó hasta que la paciente recuperó su diuresis. En 1954, los doctores Murray, Merril y Harrison realizaron el primer trasplante renal exitoso entre gemelos idénticos en la Universidad de Harvard. Desde entonces, modificaciones en la técnica quirúrgica y la aparición de nuevas drogas inmunosupresoras han llevado al trasplante renal a ser el tratamiento de elección para pacientes con insuficiencia renal crónica terminal (irct). En la Argentina, el primer trasplante renal fue realizado en 1957, en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, por los doctores Molins, Lanari, Croxatto y Rodo utilizando un riñón cadavérico.
