(Fabaceae) bajo diferentes tratamientos pregerminativos

Abstract

Ramorinoa girolae is a monotypic genus belonging to the family Leguminosae, which is endemic to the more humid mountain ranges in the provinces of San Juan, San Luis and La Rioja, Argentina. It is highly valuable because of its wood, considered one of the hardest in the world, and the high nutritional value of its seeds. Nowadays, its conservation status has been categorized as vulnerable. The objective of the current study was to assess the germination response of R. girolae seeds. Seeds (25 per plate) were sown in quadruplicate on germination paper, double-moistened with distilled water. The following pre-germination (PG) treatments were assayed: control, mechanical scarification, low temperature (2°C) for 48 h, soaking for 48 h at an initial water temperature of 80°C and chemical scarification for 1 h. The highest GR (66%) was obtained after chemical scarification (soaking in sulphuric acid) for 1 h, whereas the lowest GR was obtained after mechanical scarification (6%). The results for fresh and dead seeds were remarkably high, which would indicate a combination of primary exogenous and secondary dormancy factors in R. girolae seeds. Chemical scarification by soaking the seeds in sulphuric acid was the most appropriate PG treatment to break dormancy in this species. Currently, combinations of different PG treatments assaying other factors like alternating temperatures and photoperiods are being tested.
