Abstract

Based on sociocultural theories on learning and a dialogic stance on teaching and learning processes, this work analyzes virtual exchanges in two Odontology classes at the university. The work is focus on on understanding how dialogues between teacher and students develop in a video-conferencing platform. Focusing on the communicative and pedagogical dimension we identified four types of sequences regarding turn taking and configuration of exchanges: a) Informative-directive; b) communicativedirective; c) communicative-participative; d) communicative-dialogic. We conclude that the intentionality of the pedagogical initiative to generate dialogic practices as well as teachers’ specific interventions can help or hinder opening up dialogic exchanges and thus collective knowledge construction. Despite its situatedness, we believe detailed analysis as the one advanced in this work can contribute to keep on exploring the relationship between online discourse patterns and educational endeavors.
