Abstract

El zooplancton constituye un componente clave del ecosistema pelágico para la transferencia de carbono fijado por el fitoplancton, hacia los niveles tróficos superiores. Las tasas o la rapidez con que el carbono es transferido, a través del consumo directo de fitoplancton, o indirectamente a través de la trama trófica del anillo microbiano, podría actuar como el mecanismo regulador de la producción de niveles tróficos superiores del ecosistema marino, incluyendo los peces. Esta posibilidad es uno de los principales elementos motivadores por comprender los mecanismos que controlan la producción del zooplancton. Tal motivación no es ajena al ecosistema marino de las costas del Pacífico y Atlántico de Sudamérica, tal que en esta región se ha alcanzado un considerable desarrollo científico en el tema. En este capítulo se describen los métodos de uso actual y corriente, así como sus aplicaciones y protocolos, para estimar las tasas de crecimiento y de desarrollo de los componentes del mesozooplancton de las costas del Pacífico y Atlántico del cono sur de Suramérica. Esta revisión incluye además la estimación de la fecundidad (producción de huevos) y la viabilidad de huevos, ambos componentes clave de la producción zooplanctónica. La información descrita se basa en la experiencia obtenida a partir de los trabajos avanzados por nuestros respectivos laboratorios para las especies dominantes frente a las costas del Pacífico y Atlántico de la costa sudamericana.
