Abstract

The following article consists of the description and analysis of the conception on the teaching of Spanish as a national language and on the indigenous people and their languages by the team of Inspectors of the National Territories and Colonies, highlighting the figure of Raúl B. Díaz. For this, we use as sources his reports published between 1890 and 1916 in the magazine El Monitor de la Educación Común, which was the official broadcaster of the Consejo Nacional de Educación (CNE). In the first part we briefly present the theoretical and methodological approaches that we used for this work. Then we delve into the inspectors’ reports to describe and analyze, on the one hand, how they conceive of the indigenous people and their languages and, on the other, the plans or projects for their schooling.
