Abstract

Caddisflies are holometabolous insects with aerial adults and aquatic immature stages. It is a diverse group, distributed on all continents except Antarctica. There are about 16,200 species described worldwide, of which 335 species grouped in 80 genera and 18 families are recorded from Argentina. This work presents a summary of the knowledge of Trichoptera in terms of its morphology, diversity, phylogeny, distribution, behavior, and fundamental biological aspects, with emphasis on the Argentine species. The main publications that have appeared so far are provided, as well as a key for the recognition of the males of families registered in South America.
