Abstract

The glacifluvial plain of Pampa del Asador (northwest Santa Cruz province, Argentine) is regionally known for the high availability of black obsidian. Different macro-regional studies have shown the wide temporal and spatial use of this raw material by hunter-gatherer populations. However, along Pampa del Asador, other lithic raw materials of very good quality for knapping are also available. Previous works have mentioned the presence of basalts and siliceous rocks, but tuffs, dacites and rhyolites have also been recorded. In this opportunity we seek to characterize the availability of all these raw materials, presenting their distribution. We also analyze their effective use through the study of the archaeological contexts of the area. By integrating all the available information on the lithic resources of Pampa del Asador, we aim to highlight their role in mobility circuits on a broad spatial scale.
