Abstract

The first stage of the Teatro del Pueblo —founded by Leonidas Barletta in 1930— is marked by the presence of Roberto Arlt, who undoubtedly was the most important Argentine playwright of this group, in particular, and of the Independent Theatre, in general. Arlt’s role in Barletta leading institution was to contribute to its canonicity. Arlt was identified with the utopia of independent theater against the professional and commercial theater of the end of the century represented Argentina in genders called “costumbrismo” y “sainete”. Despite these similarities, the dramatic production of Arlt (1932-1942) achieved vanguard levels that not corresponded to the staging of his plays premiered at the Teatro del Pueblo under the direction of Barletta This article attempts to unravel some key points from this aesthetic misunderstanding.
