Agregados livianos a partir de lutita y aserrín

Abstract

The growing environmental awareness and the development of sustainable economies have increased interest in using lightweight and thermally insulating concrete. The large shale stock extracted from the upper layers in limestone quarries (Olavarría, Buenos Aires) is a potentially viable raw material to produce lightweight aggregates and generate an added-value alternative. This work aims to evaluate the effectiveness of sawdust, a waste from the wood industry, as a pore-forming agent to obtain lightweight aggregates at different sintering temperatures when shale is the primary raw material. The results demonstrated that sawdust is a suitable pore-forming agent for obtaining lightweight aggregates, improving the porosity compared to aggregates made only with shale. Lightweight aggregates with a porous black core, red cortex and properties similar to a commercial lightweight aggregate were successfully sintered.
