Abstract

Los cabildos eclesiásticos fueron una de las corporaciones de clérigos más importantes de la Iglesia católica durante el Antiguo Régimen. Si bien existieron diversos tipos, por su relevancia aquí solo se abordará sobre los cabildos catedralicios en Hispanoamérica y Filipinas. Estos cuerpos tenían funciones de culto, consejo y gobierno, y estaban integrados por dignidades, canónigos, racioneros, beneficiados y capellanes. Sus tamaños podían variar dependiendo de las rentas de cada diócesis y su peso político y social. Teóricamente, los cabildos debían asistir a sus obispos, sin embargo, frecuentemente se enfrentaron con ellos. Gracias a los derechos de patronato, el rey podía proveer sus plazas, hecho que no impidió que se constituyesen en auténticos bastiones de las élites locales. A fin de distinguir las dinámicas y particularidades de estas corporaciones en Indias, primero, se ofrecerá una síntesis de la historia de los cabildos desde su surgimiento hasta la época postridentina. Luego, enfatizará en los aspectos jurídicos y canónicos relativos a su composición, mecanismos de accesos, actos de gobierno y celebración del oficio divino. Finalmente, se ofrecerá una reflexión historiográfica sobre la temática.
