Abstract

El Laboratorio de Radiocarbono del Centro de Investigaciones Geológicas(LATYR) brinda el servicio de datación convencional por técnica de centelleolíquido a la comunidad científica nacional e internacional, con unaexperiencia de más de 40 años. Cuenta con uncompleto laboratorio depreparación de muestras donde se realiza el pretratamiento químico,combustión o disolución de carbonatos (obtención de CO2 puro) y posteriorsíntesis de benceno. En el método convencional (LSC) se mide la radiaciónemitida por 14C en la muestra transformada en benceno, mientras que conAMS se determina el número de átomos de 14C presente en la misma, dosmetodologías diferentes pero que comparten la transformación de la muestra en CO2. Una línea de grafitización consiste en un equipamientocapaz de convertir CO2 en grafito, con la eliminación de interferentes,material que se necesita en la fuente de iones de un sistema de AMS paramedir radiocarbono.En el LATYR se ha desarrollado una línea de grafitización para las muestrasque no cumplen los requerimientos de tamaño, siendo insuficiente paramedir por LSC, con el objetivo de determinar el 14C por AMS evitando lapérdida de la muestra ya que se trata de un método destructivo.
