Circuito productivo de la yerba mate

Abstract

El primer eslabón del circuito productivo de la yerba mate es el agrícola, que exige el desmonte selvático mediante el típico sistema de roza-tumba-quema, extrayendo los árboles de mayor porte para la industria maderera, volteando los árboles secundarios para obtener leña y quemando el resto de la vegetación. Debido a la gradual eliminación del bosque nativo, el suelo sufre un aumento temporario de la materia orgánica que acrecienta su fertilidad, pero luego comienza a perder materia orgánica, lo cual repercute negativamente en los rendimientos del yerbal. Los plantines sembrados provienen de viveros que utilizan semillas de genética seleccionada y que, una vez cultivados en la chacra, exigen varios cuidados que los protejan de las diversas plagas (hongos, orugas, hormigas, mariposas nocturnas, langostas, tucuras e incluso virus) a las que es particularmente susceptible, cuestión se agrava cuando la producción se desarrolla bajo un régimen de monocultivo. Casi siempre manual, la cosecha es efectuada entre los meses de mayo y octubre por los llamados ‘tareferos’ –vocablo que proviene del portugués ‘tarefa’, que significa ‘tarea’–, peones que bajo condiciones de extrema precarización laboral recolectan la hoja verde.
