Abstract

Por regla general, el tabaco exige suelos húmedos (pero no en exceso), permeables, bien aireados, de evaporación normal y características neutras a ligeramente ácidas (para los tabacos claros) o neutras a ligeramente alcalinas (para los tabacos oscuros). Sensible a las temperaturas, se desarrolla adecuadamente entre 15º C y 39ºC y requiere al menos 125 días libres de heladas, así como precipitaciones óptimas –mínimo de 560 mm durante el ciclo agrícola, a razón de 12.000 m3 de agua por hectárea– y abundante heliofanía durante las épocas de floración y fructificación, lo cual influye decisivamente sobre los niveles de nicotina y otros parámetros químicos de la hoja. Puesto que las flores extraen elementos nutritivos de la planta a expensas de las hojas, el desflore y el desbrote son prácticas culturales habituales para aumentar los rendimientos y mejorar la calidad. Si bien depende de la variedad cultivada, la cosecha suele ser manual, y en el caso de algunas variedades de tabacos rubios es seguida por el encañado, procedimiento que básicamente consiste en atar las hojas a una varilla de 1,30 metros de largo (Fernández de Ullivarri, 1990; Agüero, 2009).
