Abstract

This article aims to analyze the characterization of police violence during the covid-19 pandemic in our country in the hegemonic press of Buenos Aires City. We present quantitative data prepared within the framework of the PISAC-COVID project "Security forces, vulnerability and violence", within which all the news with violent police interventions that occurred between March 2020 and March 2021 were surveyed. From this, we elaborated a small qualitative sample for in-depth study, made up of cases that occurred in the AMBA and mediated by the Buenos Aires City digital press. From the perspective of communication and security studies, this work presents a description of the mediatization of the territories of occurrence of lethal police violence, and then focuses on the analysis of the construction of the victims who inhabit and/or transit these geographic spaces. The study found that, even when the cases addressed were published by newspapers with different editorial lines, there was homogeneous coverage in terms of selectivity and characterization of the victims and irresponsibility for police violence in the AMBA territory. Likewise, although the pandemic is the context of our study, the results did not yield relevant data regarding its link with the action of security forces, which explain the actions of the media.
