Abstract

This study focuses on I Pe 2, 9 over a long period, from the Patristic times until the end of the Carolingian era. This verse can be interpreted as a support for the universal priesthood and in fact this has been the case in Christian exegesis. Although this has not been the only function of I Pe 2, 9 in the Christian tradition, it has nonetheless forced exegetes and writers to consider the meaning of the ‘universal Christian priesthood’ compared to the ministerial priesthood that existed on a de facto basis in both ancient and early medieval Christianity
