¡Divino olfato!

Abstract

En la historia de la salvación, los sentidos del cuerpo están involucrados, pero no en la misma medida. En especial, lo están aquellos considerados “más puros” porque no tienen necesidad de contacto directo con la materia para percibir: la vista y el oído. En un caso, se habla de visión beatífica; en el otro, de tener el oído atento para escuchar la voz divina. El tacto también es importante. La salvación se juega en tocar el cuerpo de Dios con heridas que le dan muerte para darnos vida. En tanto seres encarnados, estamos deseosos de entrar en contacto tangible con lo divino (ese hambre de tacto lo resume bien la escena central de la capilla Sixtina con Dios y Adán intentando tocarse). El gusto se indica en la famosa expresión “ser la sal de la tierra”. Es un llamado a convertirse en una sal que no sea insípida y que dé mejor sabor al mundo o, al menos, evite que se pudra. Ahora, ¿qué sucede con el sentido que falta? ¿El olfato no alcanza lo espiritual suprasensible? ¿Olemos a Dios? ¿Dios nos huele? Si sus atributos son una voz que habla, un ojo que mira y un cuerpo que toca, ¿no será también una nariz que huele? En esta historia, el sentido del olfato parece ser tan marginal que vale la pena preguntarse por él.
