Abstract

The Las Piedras stream basin is located in the south of the Buenos Aires suburbs, detecting for decades the impacts of urban growth in a context of poor territorial planning. This is evidenced by recurring floods, water contamination and urban waste in water and riverbanks. The objective of this work is to evaluate the temporary change in land use, evaluate water quality and organic contamination in the Las Piedras stream basin. The change in land use was analyzed by using a geographic analysis software of Landsat 8 satellite images from the years 2013 and 2020. Likewise, several physicochemical and microbiological parameters were evaluated at four points of the stream, calculating water quality (ICA) and organic contamination (ICOMO) indices. An increase in the urban area over green areas, an ICA from medium to regular and a ICOMO from medium to very high were observed.
