Abstract

The Pilagá are an ethnic group living in the Province of Formosa (Argentina), in an area included in the Gran Chaco. In this work the role of plants in some aspects of women's reproductive cycle are studied. In particular, those plants related with menstruation, pregnancy, birth and birth control, postpartum care and nursing. Various concepts, beliefs and practices related to the items mentioned, as well as the different plants involved, are presented. Names and uses of 39 natives species are given, including those employed as contraceptive and abortifacient, and also others related to magic beliefs about the reproductive cycle. The role of plants in these aspects of Pilagá culture, and the influence of western culture are discussed.
