El obispo y las Sagradas Escrituras en el reino visigodo: El mundo alegórico de Ildefonso de Toledo

Abstract

El objetivo de este capítulo es analizar los modos en que el poder episcopal se construye y consolida en el reino de Toledo (589-711) examinando el papel del obispo en los distintos procesos de interpretación y control del mensaje revelado. Principal intermediario entre la Palabra divina y el elemento humano, el obispo se eleva y afirma en el periodo como el único capaz de descifrar los misterios escriturarios, una tarea que requería de sabiduría, técnica y erudición, pero también exigía una conducta adecuada, acorde a los preceptos y valores cristianos. Explicar el mensaje divino oculto en las Escrituras implicaba, en este sentido, interpretar la voluntad de Dios en la tierra, un conocimiento indispensable para transitar el camino de salvación. Sin embargo, una verdadera comprensión de lo contenido en los textos sagrados solo podía ser alcanzada por un sector estrecho de la sociedad, un cuerpo de especialistas que a partir de un conjunto diverso de mecanismos y prácticas devolvía a la comunidad un mensaje ya decodificado.
